The week's extreme heat took a toll in Paterson, New Jersey, where more than 100 people were treated for exposure on Monday at two high school graduation ceremonies, reports NBC News. At least 16 of those at Hinchliffe Stadium ended up in the hospital, according to the Paterson Fire Division. Temperatures were in the upper 90s, and the heat index was north of 105, per the Weather Channel.
Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh has since declared a state of emergency and canceled public recreational activities, per News 12. Paterson Public Schools hasn't responded to media outlets' requests for an explanation of why they didn't cancel the outdoor ceremonies.
