President Trump said Monday that Russia and Ukraine must agree to "land swapping" in order to end their war, reports the BBC. However, he didn't provide details, and both the BBC and Reuters point out that while Russia holds a large swath of Ukrainian territory in the east, Ukraine holds almost no Russian land. Trump spoke to reporters days ahead of his one-on-one summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, which he described as a "feel-out meeting."

  • "Russia's occupied a big portion of Ukraine—they occupied prime territory. We're going to try to get some of that territory back for Ukraine," he said.
  • "There'll be some land swapping going on."
  • Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky has not been invited to the summit, though Vice President JD Vance said the US is trying to set up some kind of meeting to include both him and Putin, per the New York Times. Zelensky also has insisted that Ukraine will not agree to hand over any land to Russia.
  • "I'm going in to speak to Vladimir Putin, and I'm going to be telling him, 'You've got to end this war,'" said Trump. "'You've got to end it.'"
