Elon Musk is adding another venture to his already crowded portfolio. On Friday, the xAI CEO announced plans for a new company he's calling "Macrohard"—a name Musk described as tongue in cheek but attached to a most serious project. The aim: to create a company that rivals Microsoft, but built entirely on artificial intelligence. Musk shared the news on X, inviting people to join xAI in building what he calls a "purely AI software company," per Quartz.

Musk argues that since firms like Microsoft don't produce physical hardware, it's plausible that AI could replicate its entire business model. One commenter asked Grok, Musk's AI chatbot, to answer questions about Macrohard. Grok called it a "playful project name" and said the company plans to offer software agents that take care of everything from coding and image generation to workflow automation, all powered by multiagent systems that collaborate on tasks.

A trademark application for Macrohard was filed by xAI at the start of August, per Business Insider. The filing cites uses including "downloadable computer programs and downloadable computer software" for generating human-like speech and text, as well as "agentic artificial intelligence," per Quartz.

While Musk is known for juggling multiple endeavors—such as Tesla, SpaceX, X, the Boring Company, Neuralink, and a range of political interests—this latest side project underscores his continued push into AI. It also arrives as Tesla's board recently granted Musk a stock award worth about $29 billion, a move designed to keep him focused on the automaker.
