Police in Illinois have launched a criminal investigation after a federal immigration officer allegedly fired a pepper-spray projectile at a reporter's vehicle outside an ICE facility that's been the site of recent protests, including over the weekend. CBS News Chicago reporter Asal Rezaei visited the site in Broadview on Sunday, looking for activity. She said she was alone in her truck with the driver's window open when a masked ICE agent, positioned behind a fence about 50 feet away, fired a pepper ball at her vehicle, striking the driver's side panel. The chemical agents quickly filled the truck's interior, leaving Rezaei's face burning. She vomited but ultimately declined medical treatment at the scene, per CBS News.

Rezaei reported there was no protest underway at the site and no one else nearby, except for a firefighter checking on the area. Her vehicle, she added, had been present at the facility multiple times in the past, though she did not verbally identify herself as a journalist during this visit. The incident prompted Broadview Police Chief Thomas Mills to announce an official criminal investigation into what he described as an "allegedly unprovoked attack." Mills said his department expects full cooperation from the Department of Homeland Security. There have also been allegations of violence against peaceful demonstrators at the site. One protester tells CBS he's worried agents will "start using lethal rounds" next.
