Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan today asked the state’s Supreme Court to declare Rod Blagojevich unfit to serve as governor, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. "We think it is very clear he is incapable of serving," said Madigan. She wants to prevent the scandal-plagued governor from appointing Barack Obama's successor in the Senate, the Tribune reports. Blagojevich has resisted calls to resign, but his chief of staff and co-defendant quit this morning.
Since Blagojevich’s arrest Tuesday, Madigan had said she intended to move unless impeachment proceedings began. Now she’s officially filed the paperwork, using what’s known as Rule 382 to ask the court to rule on “the ability of the governor to serve.” "We want to make sure the people of Illinois have a governor who can legitimately fulfill the duties of that office," she said today.
