Obama's election makes the dream of the Founding Fathers more real than ever

Abraham Lincoln's dream of extending the liberty set out by the Founding Fathers to all Americans comes one step closer to reality with Barack Obama's inauguration today, Sen. Dick Durbin writes in the Hill. Obama's election represents a “new summit” in America's long struggle to be "one nation, one people, undivided,” writes Durbin.

The new president faces huge challenges, notes the senior Illinois senator—including continuing injustice and inequality. But in the tough times ahead, we would all be wise to recall the lesson of Lincoln, that "America’s greatest strength is in our unity. We should remember, as our new president reminds us, that we are—and always will be—the United States of America."
