With Batman presumed dead, keeping the streets of Gotham City safe will be left to comics' only gay hero, reports the Daily Telegraph. Batwoman—described as a "lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night"—will star in a 12-issue run of Detective Comics being hailed as groundbreaking by gay organizations.
Batwoman, aka Katherine "Kate" Kane—first introduced in 1956 to quash whisperings about the bat bachelor's own sexuality—was outed in 2006 but has only made cameo appearances until now. "We have been waiting to unlock her," says a writer. "Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character."
