Two days of massive demonstrations have convinced the Pakistani government to reinstate the nation's chief justice, CNN reports. Hundreds of angry lawyers filled the streets as a government spokesman said Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry would soon regain his position. Protesters demanded that the government fulfill its promise to reinstate judges deposed by former President Pervez Musharraf.
Police waged running battles with mobs of Pakistani protesters in Lahore today hours after reports that opposition leader Nawaz Sharif had been arrested to prevent him from leading a demonstration in Islamabad. Cops in riot gear fired tear gas at stone-throwing protesters near the Lahore Supreme Court. The demonstrators scattered, but regrouped.
