Quebec Docs Push to Make Ski Helmets Mandatory

Doctors in Quebec are pressing their case to the province's sports minister to make helmets mandatory for skiers, the Montreal Gazette reports. They met with the minister yesterday, the same day Natasha Richardson died after falling on a beginners' course there. She had no helmet. Minister Michelle Courchesne will next meet with ski operators.

"We are going to look at both sides of the coin and see what can be done to increase the use of helmets," said a spokesperson. The ski industry opposes a law, for fear of becoming the "helmet police," said a spokesperson for one group. The doctors first called for mandatory use three weeks ago, but Richardson's death is expected to add impetus to the argument. (More Natasha Richardson stories.)
