Hillary Clinton said today the US hopes the outcome of the contested Iranian presidential election reflects the "genuine will and desire" of the Iranian people. "We are monitoring the situation as it unfolds in Iran, but we, like the rest of the world, are waiting and watching to see what the Iranian people decide," the secretary of state said in Ontario. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has emerged the easy winner, though his main rival alleges fraud.
Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the Obama administration is paying close attention to reports of alleged election irregularities. At a joint appearance with Clinton, Canadian foreign affairs minister Lawrence Cannon said his country was "deeply concerned" by reports of irregularities in the election.
