A 15-year-old girl today admitted that she’d lied to police when she told them she’d been abducted and gang-raped, because she didn’t want to explain why she wasn’t at home Friday night. When a police officer found the girl by a Contra Costa College bus stop around midnight, she told him she’d been abducted at gunpoint in broad daylight in downtown Richmond, Calif., driven to an unknown residence, sexually assaulted by two men, then dropped off at the college.
The case drew instant attention in Richmond because of the real gang-rape of a Richmond High School girl in October. Police launched a full investigation into the 15-year-old's claims, but security cameras revealed no evidence of the girl’s abduction. Yesterday, she called to recant the story. Police will now have to decide whether to charge her with fabricating a police report, but such charges are rare in cases involving sexual assault allegations, notes the Contra Costa Times.
