Honor System Holds at Unmanned DC Store

If you’re among those who’ve lost faith in humanity, a story from snowbound Washington might cheer you: After employees evidently left a Safeway grocery store unlocked, customers who salvaged items from the mainly gutted shelves actually left cash for them. A Safeway rep can’t confirm that’s how things went, but a Post reporter saw money left at the Tenleytown store—as witnesses and cops said.

“People were getting groceries and leaving the money on the counter,” one witness said. “The lot had been plowed, the lights were on, the PA system was operating, but there was no one working there,” said another, who didn’t find the milk he was looking for but saw a couple with dogs leave after paying for various items. “It felt like a movie set.”
