James Cameron graciously insists ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow should win the Oscar for best director, not him—because he doesn’t “really need another one.” In an interview with Charlie Rose, Cameron says his “fantasy outcome” would be to win Best Picture for Avatar while Bigelow wins Best Director for The Hurt Locker. “In our minds, it's not a competition,” he says. “We're so celebratory of each other's work.”
Bigelow saw Avatar five times during its development, offering notes, Cameron says, adding that he did the same for The Hurt Locker: “And my note was very simple. Don't change a damn thing.” A Best Director Oscar for Bigelow would mark, “finally, the recognition catching up with the scope of her talent”—whereas, for Cameron, “I’ve already got an Oscar. I've got a couple of them, you know.” To watch the video, click here.
