The top five: Williamson County, Tenn.: Area south of Nashville that’s home to country stars including Kenny Chesney has the highest rate of married couples on the list, and John McCain got 69% of the vote there. Forsyth County, Ga.: Democratic party machines focused on cities, but decentralization favors Republicans here, where, Chris Palko writes, “homeowner associations are more powerful than any branch of local government.” Montgomery County, Texas: Centered on the planned community of The Woodlands, the suburban Houston county is “a conservative’s vision of earthly paradise,” complete with seven golf courses. Shelby County, Ala.: Home to Birmingham, it gave George W. Bush 80% of its vote and is “one of the most conservative wealthy counties in America.” Hamilton County, Ind.: Indianapolis suburb is family-friendly, rich, and “overwhelmingly Republican.” For the rest of the list, check the link at right.
