Bart Stupak Got Squeezed Into No-Man's Land

Bart Stupak is retiring from Congress, which is not-so-stunning news to pundits:

• Ben Smith, Politico: "It seems reasonable to take it as a sign of how difficult and unpleasant it is right now, in the House in particular, to attempt to stand in the middle." Stupak moved health care legislation "to the right on abortion—too far for his own party, and not far enough for the GOP."
• Michelle Malkin on her blog: "Betrayal has consequences."

• Sarah Kliff, Newsweek: With "death threats pouring into his Congressional office, it’s pretty easy to see how Stupak could decide to sit this one out." The interesting question: Is this a "harbinger of fissures between Democrats and their anti-abortion rights members?"
• Ed Morrissey, Hot Air: Obama's "meaningless" executive order couldn't save Stupak. "In this district, expect to see a referendum on Nancy Pelosi, and don’t expect the constituents to get enthusiastic about sending another Democrat to Washington to enable her and her radical agenda."
