Now it's the Democrats' turn to be accused of trying to violate civil liberties in the name of immigration reform. A crucial part of their plan calls for what amounts to a high-tech national ID card. It would have a "biometrics" component—namely fingerprints—and every worker would need one within 6 years, reports the Hill. Hello, Orwell, say critics.

“Creating a biometric national ID will not only be astronomically expensive, it will usher government into the very center of our lives," says the ACLU. Plus, everyone will need to be fingerprinted a criminal. The criticisms are overblown, says Dick Durbin, who channels Mark Zuckerberg and says privacy just ain't what it used to be. In a world where people have to take off their shoes to board a plane, this isn't so bad, the senator says.
