A vote to extend federally funded unemployment benefits for three months failed to get enough support in the House today, meaning that current benefits could expire on November 30. The bill required a two-thirds vote to reauthorize funding and faced an uncertain future in the Senate had it passed, reports the Huffington Post. Congress currently grants up to 73 weeks of unemployment benefits after 26 weeks of state benefits run out.
Democrat Alan Grayson: "It appalls me that the Republicans keep pitching and pitching and pitching the tax cuts for the rich and won't join in a bill to help people keep their homes and not have to live in their cars."
