On the biggest primary voting day in American history, the Times offers snapshots of the four major campaigns:

  • Hillary Clinton is uneasy with the crucial tool of talking about herself and performs far better on small stages than on big ones.
  • Mitt Romney has finally settled on a pitch as he’s become the underdog: He's a populist insurgent.

  • Barack Obama’s crowds just keep growing, and the candidate turns the attention into energy. Policy specifics have disappeared from his speeches.
  • John McCain is uncomfortable as frontrunner, superstitious about making predictions, and looking especially tired.
