Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand gave a fairly standard speech critical of President Trump on Friday, save for two lines: "Has he kept his promises? No. F--- no,” she told the Personal Democracy Forum in New York City. And: "If we are not helping people, we should go the f---home." Innocent slip-ups? More like a calculated strategy, with the Hill noting that she used the latter line in an interview with New York magazine in April.
A spokesperson defends the choices, per CNN. "I think it's appropriate for a senator to be exactly who they are—Kirsten is going to continue to be exactly who she is and always has been." Gillibrand, though, isn't the only politician swearing publicly, and a piece in Politico that rounds up other examples suggests it might be an asset in an "age of Trumpian combativeness." CNN's piece points out that Gillibrand is mentioned as a Democratic presidential candidate, but her spokesperson dismissed the idea that she's trying to shape her public image toward that end. The senator herself has fended off the speculation.
