Injured Mom Survives 35 Hours Lost in Woods
Lisa Holman   (Pelham Police Department)

Kathy Caufield tells WBMA that her sister is "not a real outdoorsy person." But that didn't keep 45-year-old Lisa Holman from surviving 35 hours lost in the woods of Alabama following a car crash Friday night. AL.com reports Holman was only a mile or so from home when she lost control of her car and plummeted down an embankment, leaving her unconscious and with a broken clavicle, six cracked ribs, a fractured vertebrae, and a lacerated spleen. When Holman came to, she decided to walk for help, leaving behind her purse, phone, and shoes. Lost and hemmed in by marshes, Caufield says her sister hid from the rain underneath a rock overhang "like an animal." The overhang would eventually prevent Holman from being found by an infrared-equipped police drone.

Caufield was driving around looking for Holman on Saturday when Holman's 17-year-old son spotted her wrecked car. That launched a search had up to 500 people volunteering to comb the woods. Holman was eventually found Sunday morning about 700 feet from her car. One of her rescuers gave her his lucky boots so she could walk out on her own. "Her ability to withstand these injuries, the weather conditions, and the length of time in the woods is a testament to her resiliency," the Ledger-Enquirer quotes Holman's family as saying in a statement. Caufield says her sister "prayed the entire time." "I believe angels were watching over her and protecting her every step of the way," Caufield tells AL.com. (More missing person stories.)
