The campus shooting that left a Kentucky State University student dead earlier this month has taken another turn, with the victim's parents now facing criminal charges. Court records in Vanderburgh County, Indiana, show that Chardnae Cleveland, 37, and De'Jon Darrell Fox Sr., 38, were arrested Dec. 23 on intimidation charges, per USA Today. Investigators say the pair posted Facebook comments that were interpreted as threats against 48-year-old Jacob Bard and his family. Bard of Evansville, Indiana, is the man who was initially charged with murder and first-degree assault after the Dec. 9 shooting on KSU's Frankfort campus. However, a Franklin County grand jury declined to indict Bard, concluding he acted in self-defense.
Bard, the father of two Kentucky State baseball players, was on campus Dec. 9 to discuss safety concerns involving one of his sons, according to his attorneys. They say he and his family were attacked by a mob of 20 to 30 people, some wearing masks, prompting Bard to pull a handgun and shoot two students, per WDRB. Nineteen-year-old KSU student De'Jon Darrell Fox Jr., of Indianapolis, died at a local hospital; the second student, who has not been publicly identified, was critically injured. In posts quoted by WDRB, Fox Sr. allegedly wrote that Bard would "feel the same hurt I feel," while Cleveland allegedly wrote, "I want his son dead just like mine" and suggested she would visit a criminal gang. They each posted a $1,500 cash bond three days after their arrests, per USA Today.
