The US military said Saturday that it carried out a broad wave of airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria, describing the action as a response to a deadly December ambush. US Central Command reported that more than 35 ISIS-linked sites were hit around 12:30pm ET as part of an operation, in conjuction with partners, that the Pentagon said was authorized by President Trump on Dec. 19, per NBC News. The Dec. 13 attack near Palmyra killed two American soldiers and a US civilian interpreter, according to US officials.
A Central Command spokesperson said that more than 90 precision weapons were used and that over 20 aircraft took part in the operation Saturday. The military had already conducted strikes in December on Islamic State infrastructure and weapons, officials said. "Our message remains strong: if you harm our warfighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice," the Central Command statement said, per the AP.
