A Vatican official has warned pedophile priests that a special hell awaits them in the afterlife. "It would be better that the evil deeds" cause an abuser death in secular dress" as a layperson than suffer "more terrible damnation" in hell as a priest, Monsignor Charles Scicluna told seminarians at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, reports the Irish Times.
In fact, he added, quoting Christ's teaching in the Bible, "whosoever offends one of these little ones, it is better that a millstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea." Scicluna, head of the Vatican's morality office, is responsible for catching and disciplining pedophile priests. His remarks were part of a prayer service for the victims of sexual abuse by clerics, reports AP.
