A Democratic congressman is practicing damage control after his campaign compiled a list of Jewish donors contributing to his GOP challenger. Rep. Mike McMahon's staff didn't exactly try to keep it a secret: They gave the report, subtly titled "Grimm Jewish Money Q2," to the New York Observer, with the stated intent of showing that Mike Grimm is getting a lot of money from out-of-district contributors.
"Where is Grimm's money coming from?" said campaign spokesperson Jennifer Nelson. "There is a lot of Jewish money, a lot of money from people in Florida and Manhattan, retirees." McMahon has since fired Nelson, apologized, and declared himself "outraged," reports Ben Smith of Politico. Grimm's reaction: "The fact that a US congressman would separate out any group by religion or even by ethnicity is nothing short of outrageous. This goes beyond politics." (More Mike Grimm stories.)
